How would you imagine a typical New England private country club?
The Carnegie Abbey Club is the answer. Located on Aquidneck Island, on an awesome contest overlooking Narragansett Bay, is one of the finest golf club and best golf course in Rhode Island (Ranked #4 on the 2013-2014 Best Courses in Rhode Island by Golf Digest ).
And my experience has been unforgettable.
I've been lucky to play this Donald Steel designed course joined by Mike, the club's Caddie Master, and caddied by Roger, a great guy. The club had just reopened after the winter closure and we were the only two golfers on the course.
The Carnegie Abbey Club was established in 2000, built on a land rich of history that has been the site of the Battle of Rhode Island back in 1778.
Its name comes from Andrew Carnegie, the scottish-american philanthropist and industrialist, and from the Portsmouth Abbey School, a private prep school owner of the land.
An actual life sized statue of Andrew Carnegie is visible in front of the the majestic Adirondack inspired clubhouse.
The layout of the course follows the light undulation of the local territory, with some great breathtaking views of the area from the highest holes.
Is a true links inspired course, on which the english designer has been able to recreate and transmit to the golfer the sensations and emotions of playing a scottish course.
On some of the holes really reminded me Castle Stuart and Kingsbarns!!
Challenging and fun to play with revetted pot bunkers (not many but strategically placed), undulated and tricky greens, several elevation changes and a variety of holes, the course is 6675 yds long from the back tees with a 72.7/134 course rating/slope.
The final hole 18th is one of the best and most impressive finishing hole I've ever played. A short risk-reward Par 4, just 280yds from the tips, with a light dogleg right fairway running along the Narragansett Bay on the right side, where two accurate shots are required to reach the small green.
A great day of golf on a very special place.
