Robinson Ranch Golf Club, Santa Clarita, California, Usa

I left my hotel in Los Angeles early in the morning driving north on I-5, minutes before sunrise. After 35 miles I found myself surrounded by totally different scenario. Ranches, conestogas and horses everywhere, as if I'd travelled for hundred of miles inland and thrown in the middle of the set of a Western movie.
Actually, from the 1910s to 50s, Santa Clarita area was a favorite location for movie producers. A location that today is home to a great 36 holes facility known to have the "Best Greens in Southern California" and awarded 4 stars by Golf Digest Best Place to Play: Robinson Ranch Golf Club.
Robinson Ranch, located on Canyon Country at the base of the Angeles National Forest,  features two spectacular championship golf courses, the Valley Course and the Mountain Course.
Designed by architect Ted Robinson, with the help his son Ted Robinson Jr., both courses opened in 2000. Ted Robinson designed more than 180 golf courses around the world, and the Robinson Ranch's are the only ones with his name on them. Mr. Robinson considered Robinson Ranch one of the best work of his career.
I started playing the Mountain Course, teeing off at 7 am paired with three guys from Redondo Beach.
The Mountain Course is the "shortest" and "easiest" (on the scorecard) of the two. A 6508 Yds Par 71 with a 72.3/137 Rating/Slope. Its layout runs on the sides of the surrounding hills with extraordinary views and several elevation changes. I loved the 8th hole, a short uphill drivable Par 4 with more then ten bunkers defending its green. The hardest hole of the course is the 5th, a 398 yds Par 4 where several oaks are located right where you driver landing zone will be. Fairways are generally generous and some forced carried are requested. Golfers will even deal with some water hazards that will come into play on four holes. A very fun course to play that is not to be underestimated.

Soon after I finished my round on the Mountain, I teed off on the Valley Course as a single, before running into a threesome on the back nine and finishing with them.
The Valley Course, the longer and more challenging of the the two layouts, is a 6903 yds long Par 72 with a 74.4/149 (!!!) Rating/Slope from the black tees.
It plays through a scenic valley with elevation changes, forced carries and a variety of holes that often require precise and smart shots. A mix of desert golf and parkland golf. Its fairways are even narrower and less forgiving then the Mountain Course. I loved the last six holes of the course, a stretch named "Death Row" , probably the most demanding holes of the course. A dogleg right slightly downhill 596 yard par 5 with an elevated green, an uphill long par 3, three challenging par 4s followed by the 18th, a great 522 yds par 5 finishing hole  with its green located just below the 25,000 square foot ranch style clubhouse. A though but fair course that will test all parts of your game.

By the way, their golf cart are not equipped with GPS but on course yardages provides golfers with precise distance information form several points of the course.

I loved both courses and the fantastic atmosphere of this facility.
Yes, it is a public golf club, but their motto is absolutely true... "It's not a private club, it just plays like one."

  1. I think your blog's really great. I do however wish you'd tell us the date in which you were playing each course. I only ask because here in southern California it seems some places have really let their courses go and a reference date could really help. That's all. Happy golfing.
