Maybe two unusual destinations for your next summer golf trip with your buddies, but Illinois and Wisconsin have really something special to offer that deserves to be discovered when talking about golf.
Although golf is playable usually from April to November, both states have more then 600 golf courses each to choose from. Public hidden gems and exclusive country clubs, stunning parklands courses and amazing costal links, Major and Ryder Cup venues.
And after 18 holes an incredible number of unmissable activities are available. From exploring downtown Chicago, so fascinating in the summertime, to discovering Milwaukee or adventuring on one of the hundreds activities available in Wisconsin.
An itinerary that starts from Chicago, that proceeds through Wisconsin's prairies and its glacial landscapes and ends more then 150 miles north, on one of the greatest golf courses a man designed just a few years ago, located on the Michigan Lake shores not far from the village of Kohler, Wisconsin.
An itinerary made of golf, pleasant surprises and unexpected meetings, like the one I had with Mr. Robert Trent Jones Jr. in Erin Hills.
I played four courses on this trip, each with its own peculiarity and unique identity, that perfectly represent the essence of the golf offer of both States.
- A: Cog Hill Golf & CC, just 25 miles from downtown Chicago, features 4 golf courses. The No.4, Dubsdread is ranked on the Top 100 course in the country and hosted several PGA events.
- B: Pine Meadow Golf Club, a public course located near Chicago ranked on the Top 10 courses in Illinois and considered an all time favorite among local golfers.
- C: Erin Hills Golf Club, located 40 miles northwest of Milwaukee, an amazing inland links golf course venue of the 2017 US Open.
- D: Whistling Straits, Straits Course, a Pete Dye masterpiece designed along Michigan Lake shoreline.
