Finding a public golf course in Mexico City is not an easy task. The 25 million inhabitants mexican capital offers less then 15 18-holes golf courses, and mostly of them are super private country clubs almost inaccessible such as Club de Golf Chapultepec or Club de Golf Mexico.

So, what if a visitor wants to play golf in Ciudad de Mexico? After further research I've found a couple of courses not far (in terms of distance, but not in terms of time since traffic here is huge) by the city center that allows non-members to play. Madeiras Country Club and Coral Golf Resort & Spa.

Madeiras Country Club is an magnificent golf course located in Coautitlan Itzacalli, on de Lago de Guadalupe, 30 km north of the upscale neighborhood Polanco.
Uber service in Mexico City is excellent, safe and inexpensive and in 40 minutes on a saturday morning I reached the golf course.

The clubhouse is a little antiquated, on a perfect old fashioned style mexican golf. While the caddies are mandatory and will be waiting for you near the first tee, the use of a golf cart is allowed.

The layout is an unexpected and pleasant surprise, 18 holes carved on forest of pines, oaks, cedar trees and cypress, designed in 1977 by Joe Finger (Atlanta Athletic Club).

The 6,769-yard golf course takes full advantage of its naturally beautiful location providing lots of elevation changes with undulating fairways and super fast greens and with a multitude of distinctive hole layouts while offering panoramic views of the forest and surrounding area. And suddenly, despite being surrounded by on one of the world's largest cities, golfers will feel secluded on the course.

And remind...at more then 8,000 feet above sea level (2500 m) the ball will travel much further than it would in the plains because of the rarefied atmosphere. Don't be surprised of your 150 yards PW!!

A round of golf at Madeiras County Club goes from MEX$500 to MEX$1200 while caddies fees range between MEX$280 and MEX$400 depending on the experience of the caddie.

And after your round enjoy a Margarita or a fresh local beer at the 19th hole!!
